Beyond the Beat

Beyond the Beat is our advanced ensemble. For students in 7th to 12th grade who wish to keep making music within the WGTB program, Beyond the Beat presents itself as the ideal option for those who have “aged-out” of We Got the Beat. Students within Beyond the Beat are engaged in delivering music at its finest, learning musical notation and theory, and formalizing the concepts and ideas previously acquired through WGTB.

Membership into this exceptional program commences with attendance at the Summer Drum Camp, a prerequisite for all interested students. Subsequent to this immersive experience, families are provided with the choice to have their child participate in year-round rehearsals. Like WGTB, while we highly recommend private lessons and owning personal percussion instruments, they remain optional. Notably, Beyond the Beat operates under the umbrella of We Got the Beat, ensuring access to the same, impressive array of instruments essential for cultivating exceptional musical skills.

Students enrolled in Beyond the Beat are afforded a remarkable opportunity to showcase their talents and receive insightful critiques from some of the music industry’s most influential judges and performers. A recent highlight includes Beyond the Beat’s rendition of Ashe’s “Fofocada,” performed before Judge Randy Gloss from CalArts School of Music in May 2023.
