Hosted at Fresno Pacific University, during the five daily sessions young percussionists who aspire to participate in their marching band’s drumline are given approximately 5 hours of education on Marching Snare, Marching Tenors (Quads), and Marching Bass Drum. These will be broken down into three sessions: Ensemble, Sectional, and Rudimentary.

In the ensemble sessions, students will learn pieces of music, such as simple grooves, advanced cadences, exercises from various high schools around the Valley, and transcribed DCI or WGI excerpts.

In sectional sessions, students will learn more advanced, focused techniques, as well as get a chance to rotate and play other instruments in the battery ensemble to develop appreciation.

In the rudimentary sessions, students will develop basic to advanced rudiments through repetition. This session shows a student how to properly practice, be patient, and succeed in being able to play whatever they want.

At the end of the week, the students will perform for their families what they have learned, and watch a livestreamed performance of DCI Nashville & others. No experience is necessary to attend. This camp will enhance any previous music training and provide a strong foundation for future music learning. Come and join the fun – we promise you will wish the week would never end.

Inspired campers can register for the year-round drumline. WGTB’s drumline serves students who are interested in performing in various parades, street performances, and other special events throughout the state of California.

What is the “We Got the Beat Way”?

We Got The Beat is a program that teaches students how to play music in a way that is wholly aural and experiential. Getting started with WGTB, reading music is not required nor taught.  WGTB first teaches children the qualities of responsibility, teamwork, and cooperation through playing in a band – valuable skills that can be applied well beyond the WGTB experience.  WGTB teaches these and other qualities through the study of classic rock, Latin, and jazz songs, played on drums and percussion instruments.  We Got The Beat also helps build self-confidence through performance, and further encourages individuality & self-expression through improvisation.

Through the Battery Camp, WGTB provides a place where students and staff from all walks of the valley can come together to share and expand what they know with each other for the betterment of everyone.
